Rhydian Roberts early leader in competition to be the face of Cardiff?

Early nominees cover the spectrum of Wales’ finest….

The first five days of voting for the Queens Arcade ‘Face of Cardiff’, in association with Red Dragon fm, have revealed a wide range of Welsh national treasures, celebrities and influential figures in many of the spheres close to the heart of Welsh identity – sport, politics and the arts.

Early voting has provided a clear indication of current Welsh fashion with X-Factor’s Rhydian Roberts an early leader.  Indeed, Rhydian is well ahead of his nearest ‘competitor’ Torchwood’s Gareth David-Lloyd.  Interestingly Torchwood’s John Barrowman also received a nomination, despite being born in Glasgow!

Other popular figures include singers Cerys Matthews, Charlotte Church, Tom Jones, Katherine Jenkins and Bryn Terfel as well as comedians Tommy Cooper and Max Boyce.  Perennial favourite and candidate for Great Briton, Nye Bevan has also been nominated, continuing the tradition of Welsh pride in the Father of the NHS.

No list of Welsh figures revered in Wales would be complete without sportsmen and in particular rugby players Shane Williams, Gareth Edwards and Ryan Jones.  While footballers John Toshack and James Collins also make an appearance along with Boxing’s Joe Calzage and Olympic medallist Colin Jackson.

“We wanted to do something that fired people’s imaginations, something they could participate in and came up with the ‘I am Art’ idea” said Centre Manager, Mark Nott.

“With our photo-mosaic project we are making our customers the foundation of the art itself. From a distance the picture will be a striking image of an iconic Welsh figure, whether it is someone from history or someone more contemporary. Then, as you look closer at the picture, you will see the image is made up thousands of photos of our customers, Cardiff’s finest!

“The public can continue to nominate whoever they like, who they feel would be the ‘Face of Cardiff’, on our site between now and 21st September. Then we will produce a shortlist of the 6 most popular nominees and a second round of voting will start on 22nd September until 5th October. Voting is free and we would urge everyone to have their say.
